Writing

Writes about science and culture at ArmchairGalactic; Contributor to Meatpaper, the loveliest magazine ever produced.

 Advisory Board Member

Good, Form and Spectacle, a wild, brainy London design firm and museum.

Earlier Projects

While spending eons in graduate school, also:  directed the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council’s environmental education program for at-risk youth; taught classes on Health and History of Body Image to at-risk teenage girls at San Francisco’s Life Learning Academy  (we created an exhibit for Zeum together, and even ran the Bay to Breakers!), and started/coached the first girls youth soccer team in the cloud forest town of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

Music

Singer/washboard intermittently in folk/bluegrass bands Tony and the DanzasStrange Laundry, the Cantankerous Collective and Uncle Tiny; sang in Chochmat Halev chorus and Kitka Community chorus (hear us in this video! I’m just to the right of the giant audience-member-head bobbing up and down); Lately – plunking around on the ukulele, which is often kindly called “the instrument of the people.”danzas

Places Farmed, etc.

Worked on sheep farms in New Zealand, olive farm in Greece (ancestral home); studied interpretations of health while living in the cloud forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica; studied literature in Italy (other ancestral home); speaks in a Boston (childhood home) accent fluently; and now lives in Berkeley, CA with her family.

Creatures in the Yard

1 polydactyl cat, 2 funny kids, 1 amazing husband. My beehive was there, too, until during a family bbq ornery hive members stung one person from every generation (3 total), so …taking a brief hiatus; hive is “on vacation” at our dear writerly friend’s Oakland Farm.

The Story of Hillman Bean

I’ve told it at Porchlight and other gatherings, and will tell you, too, if you’ve got a story to swap.
